‘We Made Dens’ is a series of 50 painted portraits of LGBTQIA+ people from when they were children. With a deliberately vibrant colour palette that channels joy in order to counter the institutional homophobia and othering many LGBTQ+ people have experienced throughout their lives. These celebratory paintings highlight the importance of including positive queer narratives in mainstream education, so that LGBTQIA+ children can grow up feeling that they have a place in the world. The work is in response to the detrimental impact of section 28 on LGBTQIA+ children.
The paintings have been shown as part of 'Beyond Heterotopia' at The Margate School as part of Margate Pride 2021 and at '50 Years of the GLF' exhibition at Newington Green Meeting House, London 2021.
